When I first started dropshipping, I thought it was all about scrolling AliExpress until something “felt right.” That guesswork cost me months. Today, the Indian dropshipping market is valued at USD 10.8 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at 22.6 percent annually, reaching USD 67.5 billion by 2033 according to IMARC. The opportunity is massive, but the competition is just as intense.
In India, the product you choose will decide most of your success. Everything else like ads, store design, and pricing is just fuel for the engine. If the engine is weak, more fuel won’t make it move.

Step 1: Understand What Makes a Product Work in India
When I launched my first winning product, a mustard seed necklace, it was not because it looked nice. It sold because it ticked all the right boxes. It solved a problem or fulfilled a deep desire, it was tied to emotion, it was not easily available, and it was remarkable enough to be shared.
I call this the STAR Framework.
Solves a problem
Tied to emotion
Available nowhere easily
Remarkable in its design or use
Step 2: Apply the 7P Framework for Indian Buyers
From years of testing products I built the 7P Checklist to decide if a product has true Indian market potential.
-
Purchase Price – It fits the customer’s impulse buying range
-
Perceived Value – It looks more expensive than it is
-
Paltry – It is light and small so shipping is cheap
-
Petite – It does not require complex assembly
-
Permanent – It is not a one-use disposable item
-
Prevent Sizing Issues – It avoids complicated size charts
-
Personalization – It can be customised for extra margin
For example, BoAt did not start with pure dropshipping but they began by importing and branding affordable, stylish earphones that had high perceived value, low shipping cost, and a strong emotional connection with young buyers.
Step 3: Use Free Product Research Methods
When I had zero budget for paid tools, I built my first ₹10 lakh store using only free methods.
Amazon Best Sellers – Check category rankings and look for products with a 4.0 or higher star rating, at least 1,000 reviews, and a price between ₹800 and ₹3,000 which is the sweet spot for impulse purchases in India. In 2023, neck massagers rose sharply in the Amazon rankings, signalling a work-from-home trend.
Google Trends – Filter to India, 12-month view, and focus on category-specific keywords. In 2021, I spotted a spike in “electric lunch box” searches months before competitors and it became a hot seller when offices reopened.
Social Media Tracking – Monitor Instagram hashtags like #MustHaveIndia and #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt. Use Facebook Ad Library to search keywords and filter for active ads in India. On YouTube, search “unboxing” along with the niche to check hype levels.
Step 4: Upgrade with Paid Tools When Ready
Once I could afford it, I moved to paid tools that saved me weeks of trial and error.
Minea – Lets you see winning ads across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok
Ecomhunt – Gives curated daily winning products with analytics
Sell The Trend – Uses AI to track trending products and offers store automation
In 2022, using Minea, I found a magnetic window cleaner trending in Eastern Europe. I tested it in India and it made ₹5 lakh in the first month.
Step 5: Validate Before You Commit
Skipping validation is the fastest way to waste money. Here is my quick test.
-
Search volume of at least 1,000 monthly searches in India according to SEMRush or Google Keyword Planner
-
Place a supplier test order to check quality, packaging, and delivery time
-
Run ads of ₹500 to ₹1,000 per day for three days to measure clicks and add-to-carts
If there are no clicks after three days, I stop immediately.
Step 6: Learn from Real Brands That Started Small
Gymshark began as a UK dropshipping fitness apparel store and is now valued at over 1.4 billion US dollars according to Forbes.
In India, several Shopify entrepreneurs featured on Qikink’s blog began with single-product dropshipping stores like posture correctors and LED mirrors before scaling to multi-crore turnover and moving into private labelling.
Many Meesho sellers started with imported gadgets and décor items, then shifted to inventory-based models once they validated demand through dropshipping.
Step 7: Adapt to Indian Buying Behaviour
Tier 1 cities value fast delivery, branded packaging, and are willing to pay more for convenience.
Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities still see more than 40 percent of orders as cash on delivery according to PwC India.
Festive seasons like Diwali, Rakhi, and the wedding months create surges in gifting, décor, and apparel demand.
Final Word
Finding a winning product in India is part science and part instinct, but the instinct only comes from testing many products. I started with one mustard seed necklace and grew it to crores in revenue because I followed a system.
If you use the STAR and 7P frameworks, start with free methods, move to paid tools when ready, validate before committing, and always adapt to how Indian buyers shop, your odds of success go up dramatically.
